A Memo to the International Reading Association

As a point of information: Reid Lyon is Chief, Child Development and Behavior Branch, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health. He has been invited by the International Reading Association as a featured speaker at their spring conference in Reno. If you'd like to read his 'bomb colleges of education' remarks, see

When we think our professional organizations aren't acting in our best interests, then we should speak out. That's what Susan Harman, longtime member of IRA, is doing. She sent this letter to the board and staff of IRA.

Subject: Read Lyin'

To the Staff and Board of IRA:

I am shocked that an organization dedicated to improving reading would succumb to political pressure and give Read Lyin' a platform at our
convention. Have you forgotten that the whole NICHD/No Corporation Left Behind crew walked out on us two years ago? Have you forgotten that the National Reading Panel report was a sham that is now--disastrously--determining reading policy around the country? Have
you forgotten that Reid Lyon was its architect?

Have you forgotten he threatened to blow up the colleges of education?

Have you lost your minds?

I demand that you either rescind his invitation, or at worst, give equal time to those who know the truth about him and No Corporation Left Behind: Elaine Garan, Stephen Krashen, Gerry Coles, Dick Allington, for
starters.

Very sincerely,
Susan Harman, Ed.D., Principal
