NICHD Researchers Warn Against Reading only the National Reading Panel Summary

"The National Reading Panel executive summary is intended for a general audience, and anyone who only reads the summary is likely to be misinformed."

This statement is in reply to Steven Strauss's February PDK article "Challenging the NICHD Reading Research Agenda."

Strauss asks:

  • "Why did it take the scholarly objections of non-NRP researchers, such as Elaine Garan, Gerald Coles, and Richard Allington, to finnaly elicit an acknowledgment of misinofrmation?. . .
  • At the very least, those who acknowledge this misinformation should demand that there be an immediate moratorium on implementing No Child Left Behind, until we can sort out just how much of that law is misinformed. . . .
  • For its part, the NRP can implement the very simple step of revising its website, so that the summary report is no longer referred to as an 'ideal' source of information. Instead, it should be referred to, correctly this time, as a source of misinformation."

  • Subscribe to Phi Delta Kappan for the full exchange between these researchers and Steven Strauss.
