Online Learning

by Susan Ohanian

I received this offer in the morning's e-mail--for a courses that will certify me to teach English anywhere in the world. The claim is that this course is accredited by the International Accreditation & Recognition Council (IARC)

The IARC membership list is interesting. Here are just a few.

  • 2RSGroup Industrial Training is located "behind Seiyoun Palace" in Yemen. Clients include Halliburton.

  • American College of Journalism. Carl Hammerschmidt, an Australian, is primary course writer; Diploma of "Professional Freelance Journalism" is awarded to successful graduates of this Course.

There's also a British College of Journalism, which claims the press pass they issue to graduates brings discounts on travel and accommodation.

  • Australian Course of Professional Styling (Course developed by someone who took a summer course at New York University and has styled for Paris Hilton)

  • Bircham International University says their Doctor of Philosophy online doctorate degree is signed by a Doctor from a formal traditional university, the President and Registrar of the University.

  • College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies provides world-leading education in evidence-based natural medicine.

  • And on and on.

I received a special discount offer if I'd enroll immediately at tefl247, which promises if I take their course, I'll be qualified for my "first teaching adventure" and certified to teach English anywhere in the world. Here's their pitch:

Become certified to teach English across the globe through TEFL247's accredited 140-hour advanced online English course for only $75 -- a $245 value!

Universal certification seems a bargain at $245.
