Groveling for Money at the Expense of Children and Professionalism

by Susan Ohanian

Although the mayor of Richmond, California, refused to sign the California Mayors Education Roundtable letter AND wrote a strong rebuttal, Bruce Harter, Superintendent, West Contra Costa School District, in Richmond did sign the letter. The letter basically grovels for federal funds and in so doing strongly supports

  • adopting rigorous standards that prepare students for success in college and the workforce

  • recruiting and retaining effective teachers, especially in classrooms where they are needed most;

  • turning around low-performing schools; and

  • building data systems to track student achievement and teacher effectiveness.

  • Maybe Bruce Harter should talk to a few Contra Costa teachers, namely the ones who worry about all the cheating going on:

    Some of my fellow teachers cheat, putting more pressure on me to get the test scores that others seem to believe are only obtainable through cheating.

    But, then, Bruce Harter was superintendent when the Downer Five, which became the Downer Ten, were involuntarily transferred for daring to speak up for professionalism.

    Check the list of signers to the California Mayors Education Roundtable letter and apply pressure locally.
