Making a Buck off the Common Core Standards

Ohanian Comment: What really breaks my heart is that there are a lot of really good books in these "fun packs." I see these books in relationship to Scholastic's honored tradition of book clubs, which was a way of getting good books into the hand of kids. Now they are undermining the spirit of those book clubs. I can tell a heart-warming story of the joyful uproar in my third grade classroom when my third graders discovered a new Amelia Bedelia title in the Scholastic book club offerings. It had nothing to do with standards except those standards of a spiritual kind. . . and then there was the time when we got to choose 100 free Scholastic titles. Scholastic is degrading an honored heritage.

And curses.
