Michigan recession officially over. Catherine Ferguson closing anyway

by Susan Ohanian:

In 2010,the London School of Economics paid for Asenath Andrews, the remarkable principal of Catherine Ferguson Academy to travel to England to speak on urban issues. In her own city, emergency financial manager Robert Bobb has never sought her advice but decided to close her school. In a district where high school students miss an average of 45 school days a year, this school which focuses on educating poor pregnant and parenting young teens, reports average daily attendance of 97%.

Now new Emergency Manager Roy S. Roberts also has the school on the chopping block, and the principal reports she no longer has any hope of keeping it open.

Read an account of the school appearing on the World Socialist Website here.

See the Rachel Madow offered a moving and informative report on the disappearance of democracy in such decisions.
