More News of World Class Standards
Short $240,000 in a $1.4 million budget, the Edgemont School District in South Dakota cut three teachers, a principal, the gifted program, and full-time kindergarten. They asked for volunteers to coach sports.

    Then they cut Fridays.

This tiny district will join 100 rural districts nationwide in operating on a four-day week to save money.

    Ohanian comment:

They should add up how much more parents will be spending on child care. And how much insurance rates will climb because professional coaches aren't in charge of track and wrestling.

They should also add up how much is being spent on the tests that monitor their world class standards. Things are tough all over. The same edition of the New York Times reported on the fact that the number of billionaires in the U.S. fell from 307 in 1999 bo just 266 in 2001. If one of those billionaires lived in Edgement, probably there'd be full-time kindergarten AND a wrestling coach.
