Florida Professor Fighting to Save Literature

    Dear All,

As you well know the Florida Council of Teachers of English (FCTE) Conference was this past weekend, and it was a great motivator. What some of you may not know is that literature is being threatened in this state and is being replaced with reading (as though that makes sense). It'd take me an hour to write it all out but as next year's program chair of FCTE, I am trying to get Oprah Winfrey to prevent that from happening.

I asked everyone at the conference and now I am asking you to call her at Harpo Studios by this Friday 10/21/05 at 5:00 p.m. I think a 1,000 or so phone calls might get her attention. Here's what you do.

Call 312-633-1000 and ask for Media Relations.
Identify yourself and where you teach.
Say the following: "We need Oprah to help English teachers save literature in Florida. Please call Dr. Joan Kaywell at the University of South Florida at 813-974-3516 to find out how."

Please send this message to everyone you know: fellow English teachers, parents, book publishers, media specialists, and anyone who cares that literature belongs in our school system.

    Thank you and. . . .

    Create peace,

    Joan F. Kaywell, Ph.D.
