All that WASL math elbows out electives

Ohanian Comment: I've known and admired Juanita for years as a committed activist. What I admire here is the committed parent, able to stand up for what is best for her child.

As the director of a statewide nonprofit organization fighting the wrongful uses and harmful consequences of WASL for eight years, I have heard from many parents whose children are denied access to vocational education, band, choir and art. Parents have the right to demand a well-rounded education for their children. A WASL-determined and -designed schedule is never well-rounded.

My oldest daughter is a middle school band teacher now away from the classroom earning her master’s degree. While teaching in Federal Way, she often fought to keep students in band when the threat of extra math or English classes was made based on WASL failure. When a student was due to be removed, my daughter worked with parents to convince school administrators that the best interest of the student was to remain in band.

When my younger daughter was being placed in reading instead of physical education in eighth grade, I overrode the placement, telling her counselor that my daughter’s English teacher and I were competent to overrule a standardized test score and waive the reading class. That daughter is now doing very well at a four-year university.

No parent should stand for his or her student’s education being narrowed and destroyed by WASL. No teacher should allow a student to be removed from or denied access to any course without a fight.
