    Arizona Test Stupidity
Here's a question to determine whether an Arizona high schooler meets state standards in mathematics:

Bob is making a long-distance phone call from Cordes Junction to his friend in Cedar Springs. The telephone company says the call will cost $1.25 for the first minute and $0.75 for each additional minute. If Bob and his friend talk for m minutes, how much will the call cost?

    A. 0.75 + 1.25m

    B. 1.25 + .75(m-1)

    C. 0.75 + 1.25(m-1)

    D. 1.25 + 0.75m

The testers left out the only possibility that makes any sense:

    E. Bob must be a high-flying Standardisto. He shouldn't make any more phone calls until he finds a telephone company with more consumer-friendly rates. Here are some intra state rates I found for Arizona:
    Per minute:

    $0.1850
    $0.0507
    $0.1740

    Conference calls:
    14.9 cents/min per leg
