Maybe The Reporter Couldn't Find a Librarian
    Letter to Editor

    School librarians at a glance

Your Betsy Leth did a fine job of covering the current scene for the modern-day public, academic and special librarians ["New chapter for librarians," At-Work Extra, Aug. 12]. But she missed a link in the chain. She never interviewed a school librarian. Maybe she couldn't find one.

California has the worst level of school library staffing in the nation. We would have to hire more than 2,000 school librarians statewide to move up to 49th place in the United States.

Four years ago Gov. Pete Wilson gave California the first money in its history ($158 million or $28 per student) specifically targeted at school libraries. Gov. Davis is now trying to eliminate it, and the Los Angeles Unified School District is trying to get permission to spend it on something other than books.
