Here's How YOU Can Make a Difference

Publication Date: 2003-08-29

This terrific idea comes from a retired teacher friend who prefers to remain anonymous. Let's hope this spreads like wildfire.

I go to thrift shops, sorts through their children's books, looking for good ones. I pay a quarter each.

Then I take 5 books to the local laundromat and look for Mommies or Mommies-to-be. I give my little speech about being a retired teacher and how I hope Moms will read to kids--and here are the books. and here they are.

I figure if they are at a laundromat, they can't
afford their own washer-dryer, so they probably can't afford a lot of other things either, like books for kids. The look of shock on the faces of
these Moms is reward enough for me. Just think:
getting something free--and good for kids besides.

The whole deal takes about ten minutes. I keep a bag of books in my car at all times--just in case I see a Mom with a lot of kids at a bus stop or walking home from the market to the trailer park.

I'm always looking for opportunities to give away a few books while stressing the importance of reading.
