Rouge Forum Conference: Their Wars Left Behind
A reminder of the Rouge Forum “Their Wars Left Behind,” conference in beautiful downtown Detroit, at Wayne State University, March 1 to 4. There is still a little time to submit presentation proposals. http://www.pipeline.com/~rgibson/rouge_forum
Keynoters include Susan Ohanian, Patrick Shannon, and Wayne Ross. Most recently, the National Education Association leadership has attacked Ohanian for her efforts to petition to abolish the NCLB.
In order to conduct this conference, we need money. As all our members and subscribers know, we rarely ask for funds, and we do so reluctantly again as we have been able, so far, to just rely on spontaneous donations. However, we need to step up our work, just as elites are stepping up their wars, and their attacks on education. We are the only active education group in the US that has had the courage and common sense to link the profit system, war, intensified racism and nationalism, and the regimentation of the curricula and high stakes tests in schools. Our work matters. We have raised the level of debate, especially in education, but in community groups all over the US, and internationally as well.
This year we plan to extend our efforts with this conference, regional mini-conferences, more activity within the National Council for the Social Studies, and we will enter the Modern Language Association, and the American Historical Association. We also plan a new series of publications.
One of our contributors noted that the way we raise money will profoundly influence what we become. We have witnessed many reform groups, which became dependent on foundation money and a few wealthy donors, self-censoring at levels that embarrass even their leaders. Instead, we hope to continue to rely these occasional appeals for cash, to keep our integrity, and still function.
There is a link for donations on the Rouge Forum page. Here is a direct link. If you can afford five bucks, or five hundred bucks, great. We thank you.
