Commencement Speech


At the Winter Commencement University of Michigan for Graduates and Undergraduates Bob Moses gave the Commencement address and received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Here is the entire text of his commencement address:


To Dr. Coleman, the Regents, the Graduates and their families and honored guests,

I am deeply appreciative and honored to be your commencement speaker.

In his remarks, Chair of the University Senate, Stanley Berent, invoked some words from the Mission Statement of your great and public State University:

The University of Michigan has as an important goal to develop leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

I am asking the members of this graduating class, this entire class, as a collective, in the spirit of those words from the Mission of a Public State University, to actively pursue the initiation, structuring and wide-spread dissemination of local, regional, and national conversations, focus groups and forums about the pressing opportunity and need, in this our country, to construct a Constitutional Amendment to establish at the level of the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court, a Constitutional Right to a Quality Public School Education for every child living in the United States.
