The Education Budget: A Suggestion

While LAUSD will have trouble paying its teachers and must eliminate

valuable programs ("L.A. school district tightens the belt," May 20),

California continues to waste money on items that have absolutely no

research support.

An example is the High School Exit Exam. Research has shown that

state high school exit exams do not lead to more college completion,

higher employment or higher earnings by graduates. Researchers also

report that exit exams do not result in improved academic achievement.

In fact, researchers have yet to discover any benefits of exit exams.

This is only one example. There are many others.
