Re "State can't let money slip away" (Editorial, Aug. 20): President Barack Obama's Education Department grant requirement to include use of test data to measure teacher effectiveness is a sneaky way to mandate a major educational policy change from the federal throne. The tradition of local control is eroded by this federal method.

Federal mandates have for years stifled education and generated mountains of paperwork ΓΆ€“ not innovation, as indicated as the purpose of the grant money.

This stunt sends a message: Play by our rules and convictions. Local school boards are not needed. It is a extremely disappointing process for those of us who voted for change in the federal application of power.
