To the editor

Regarding, Respect your children

A nation writhing in the promise of perpetual war

and rising inequality is going to make peculiar

demands on its schools. The Obama education

project is a war project: a regimented national

curriculum promoting witless nationalism;

anti-working class high stakes exams; merit pay;

militarization in poor areas; some degree of

privatization, all conducted in an atmosphere of

fear and intimidationĂ¢€“each element leading to and

enforcing the other. Many youth face an

unacceptable choice: Street gangs, bad jobs, no

job, or the Marines. That they do not recognize

this as horrific measures the success of NCLB.

The hysteria you mention has deep roots, going

back to 9/11, a consumerist culture, the

abolition of history, culminating in the hysteria

Obama built around himself. His education speech

was initially designed to recapture and rebuild

that. Applause to those who reject the education agenda as a war agenda.
