To the editor

As a retired teacher continuously concerned about education, I attended the meeting featuring Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Sen. Tom Harkin and others ("Iowans Give Suggestions for Education Law Revamp," March 15).

While many good plans, ideas and hopes were put forth by the secretary, and numerous teachers and parents were in the audience, the bottom line became the lack of adequate funding in the education budget.

It was pointed out that funding for education could be taken from the bloated Pentagon budget if only the Congress would have the courage to do so. Parents and educators here and around the country turned out to voice their concerns at meetings.

When will ordinary people's needs be heard more clearly above the campaign money given to the senators and representatives from both parties by the military industries?

President Dwight Eisenhower, who warned us about the military-industrial complex many years ago, must be exhausted from turning over in his grave as his words of warning are ignored.
