Let's invest in libraries & librarians

According to the results of a national test (NAEP), California's fourth and eighth graders are among the worst readers in the country, just as they were in 1992.

Since 1992 we have dumped whole language and bilingual education and have embraced No Child Left Behind. None of this helped.

What would help? Improve our libraries. Studies show that library quality and the presence of credential librarians are associated with better reading achievement.

California's school libraries have among the fewest books per child and have the fewest librarians per student in the US. In the recent America's Most Literate Cities report, California cities captured the bottom four places in public library quality with LA in 67th place out of 70.

Let's invest in what works.
