Dear Senator Harkin,

I understand you met with Diane Ravitch and Richard Rothstein re No Corporation Left Behind, as we school folks call it. I further understand that you hadn't heard that teachers hate this law. I don't know anyone - parent, teacher, or student - who is on the ground in schools who thinks there's anything good about NCLB.

Oh wait: the one good thing is that it's underfunded. Tests reflect socioeconomic status and nothing else. We already know which kids are poor. Let's work to make them middleclass, and not to turn their schools into test prep factories. The classes we are cutting to make time for test prep are the very classes that keep them in school: art, music, vocational ed, social studies, science.

Revoke NCLB now.

Susan Harman
