To the editor

Differences Are Good

Recently, one of your editorials said these incredible words ("Grads, time to get on with it," June 1) "Help people to not only ignore differences they see in others but to not even notice them." Wouldn't it have been much better to have said, "Help people to distinguish and value the differences they see in others."

Whoever wrote the editorial was reflecting a big problem in our society right now -- the attitude that differences are wrong or bad. It may be part of the reason the Federal Department of Education is launching the "Common Core Standards Initiative" -- for nurturing human uniformity.

Our country is great because every person is an individual with important differences -- not because we are all the same. Let's begin to show how positive differences are a wonderful asset, not a liability.
