To the editor

Muncie schools plan to improve literacy by using scripted programs and frequent testing. This is the hard way ("Muncie schools will launch a literacy effort this fall," July 6).

Decades of research and centuries of experience tell us that the easiest, most efficient and most pleasant way of improving reading ability, as well as writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary, is through extensive, self-selected reading. The power of reading has been confirmed in recent years by many studies showing that library quality is related to reading achievement.

The most obvious means of improving literacy does not even appear to be part of the Muncie plan.
