To the editor

In writing about how state education bookies in Florida ignore history and research when setting policy about retention (EDUCATION | May 21, 2003 "A Pupil Held Back, a Heavier Burden" ), Michael Winerip shows us that the crazy accountability measures of the Federal No Child Left Behind act put all children at risk. Just about the only way states can hope to get the numbers the Fed demands is to hold kids back in school. In the end, that won't work either, but desperation breeds atrocity.

It's past time to demand that children's welfare be put above politics.
