To the editor

The problem with this letter is that satire is dead with all corporate politicos deciding school policy. They will take this to heart--and toughen up those pre-schoolers.

Probably there will be a deluge of signups for Krashen's new organization.

Unprepared for kindergarten: A threat to America

The Star informs us that many children entering School 61 are unprepared for the academic rigors of kindergarten ("Kindergartners' 1st test shows who's set to read," Sept. 26).

This is a disgrace and a threat to our country.

Clearly we need to require and toughen up pre-school, and make sure it includes a full dose of pre-phonics (phonemic awareness). We should require all children to know the alphabet and be able to spell their names as a condition for entering kindergarten. And let's insist that parents properly prepare their children for pre-school.

There is no hope for the US is to compete internationally if we continue to treat 4 and 5 year olds like children.
