[Susan notes: Strong letter states the agenda of NCLB.]

To the editor

Francis X. Clines's observations about the effectiveness of charter schools (Editorial Observer, June 3) only touch on the problems of "no child left behind."

The president's education agenda is designed to set public schools up for failure and increase the outcry for alternatives like charter schools and vouchers. That those alternatives are being found to be flawed and lacking in the same accountability so vehemently demanded of public schools means little.

This administration has pulled few punches in its desire to fully privatize education in this country. Only one thing seems to count in the Bush White House: the marketplace. Those who can afford a quality education will always find one. Those who cannot will be left behind.
