To the editor

Sometimes there is a heartfelt need to rant. . . particularly when a New York Times functionary goes on and on about what a nice guy Bill Gates has become in middle age.

You wouldn't have so benign a view of the middle-aged Gates, claiming he's "light years removed from the brilliant tyrant in AllenĂ¢€™s account: a geeky executive who prowled the parking lot looking for someone who dared to leave work early"-- if you were a teacher in a large urban district under the thumb and whim of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Ask Memphis teachers, for example, how they like those earbuds, transmitting messages on how to teach. And pretty soon you can ask every child in the land how they like the Common Core Standards--financed and pushed by Gates. Ask 8th grade boys how they like "Little Women" or 11th graders about "As I Lay Dying." And worse.
