Reach Out and Read: Simple, Inexpensive and It Works

Sent to the Denver Post, June 26, 2011

The only thing missing from Literacy program for children gains popularity in Colorado health clinics, (June 26) is the fact that "Reach Out and Read" has an outstanding track record.

A number of studies, published in scientific journals, show that informing high-poverty families about the value of books and read-alouds, and providing them with just a few books over several years results in more reading-aloud to children, which in turn results in substantial gains in vocabulary knowledge.

Reach Out and Read is simple and inexpensive, and it works.
