[Susan notes: This strong letter that describes teachers' emotions so well, provoked strong comment:

Reader Comment: The data support Mr. Lucido completely. His view is supported by his classroom experience as well as his knowledge of the scientific research. We should listen to him, not to people who have never spent a day along in a room with children (eg Arne Duncan), or who are ignorant of the many scientific studies done on how children learn (eg Arne Duncan).

To the editor

The article on Sunday on the upcoming reform of the disastrous No Child Left Behind law was frustrating. About 82,000 out of 100,000 schools could be deemed "underperforming" soon. Nearly all public schools are to be labeled as such by the law's 2014 deadline. This was a massive, intentional flaw in NCLB.

As a teacher, I see powerful people in control of making decisions that real educators have no say in. The monetary benefits of those decisions are landing in the hands of corporate marauders who falsely say that their charters or online schools are better and that scripted lessons and high stakes tests are necessary.

Kids have suffered. I'm in a profession where my own instructional judgment is no longer valued or trusted.

How does this path of education make me feel as a teacher of 12 years? I am very scared. If I were to describe the feeling, it would be a panicky feeling, like being on board a boat ready to go over a huge waterfall.

I want to scream out to anyone that will hear, "We are dying!"

Joseph Lucido
