Ms. De La Torre:


Your report ( Hartford Superintendent Plans Longer School Year For Kindergartners) states "Education studies have established that early literacy is critical to a child's long-term success."

Nonsense. Research shows exactly the opposite--that early reading has no relationship whatever to long-term success. Many countries in Europe and Asia do not even begin to teach reading until children are age 7. Those countries consistently outperform the U.S. on international tests.

The practices described in your article constitute child abuse.
