To the editor

I want to express my admiration for Colin Woodard's Special Report: The profit motive behind virtual schools in Maine. It is a critical story--outrageous as well as ominous regarding the survival of public education. It deserves the Pulitzer, and I hope it will be an inspiration to reporters in other states to check on the well-being of their public schools.

I have to say my favorite quote comes from the director of the Maine Turnpike Authority, regarding K12: "They have enormous capacity and their materials and methods have been extremely well thought out."

Indeed. It just so happens I know a lot about those materials: I studied them and wrote a report: The K12 Virtual Primary School History Curriculum: A Partcipant's-eye View." (http://nepc.colorado.edu/publication/the-k12-virtual-primary-school-history-curriculum-a-participants-eye-view)

In short, K12 delivers myths filled with incest and infanticide, endless accounts of wars, biographies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan, and the story of Caesar being killed by 23 of his friends--to first graders.

I'm frightened by the threat of the takeover of public education, and I'm outraged that the people giving away our heritage haven't bothered to examine the curriculum they're embracing.

Thank you again for this important expose.
