[Susan notes: Nobody seems to be paying attention. The stories from longtime Los Angeles teachers are brutal and unconscionable. The public attitude seems to be a gigantic shrug: get rid of these teachers and get some new ones.

Re "Inside LAUSD's 'teacher jail' " (Nov. 28):

If Superintendent John Deasy has done anything for Los Angeles Unified, it's instilling a culture of fear among teachers. According to the article "LAUSD to re-file teacher reports" (Daily News, Feb. 23), under Deasy's short tenure, he dismissed or denied tenure to more than 850 educators. The year before he took over, only 10 teachers were fired and tenure was virtually automatic. Many teachers I've spoken with enter their respective schools fearing that a vindictive administrator, parent or student will falsely accuse them of wrongdoing and as a result they'll lose their jobs. They feel their due process rights are being grossly violated. Teachers should not have to walk on eggshells for fear of losing their jobs. A culture of fear is counterproductive to teachers and the emotional and academic well-being of their students.
