[Susan notes: Sarcasm is undoubtedly a mistake in letters to the editor, but I like the letter.

There's a glitch in the system. Even though this say the letter was published, it wasn't.]

To the editor

As a longtime teacher in a profession blamed for the social/economic conditions that affect student behavior, I have some sympathy with the diet reform-minded governors and mayors in Boston, Louisville, and elsewhere ( Can a Whole City Stick to a Diet? Fat Chance, Jan. 23, 2013). But, hey, why are these politicos allowed to make excuses? Why aren't they treated the same way the US Department of Education treats educators: Turn the situation around or you will be replaced.

Here's a suggestion: Mayors and governors can call on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the real skinny on getting eaters on board with reform. The Foundation spends a lot of money telling people how to do their jobs. 28-page rubrics assessing leader performance are available. Institute public weigh-ins so the public will have a value added score to rate the mayor's effectiveness.
