[Susan notes: Kudos to Op Ed for warning about the preschool performance bandwagon.]

To the editor

Kudos to Stephen Hinshaw and Richard Scheffler ( Expand Pre-K, Not A.D.H.D., who warn that "Unless we're careful, today's preschool bandwagon could lead straight to an epidemic of 4- and 5-year-olds wrongfully being told that they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder."

Vermont politicos and bureaucrats climbed on the preschool "performance" bandwagon in their winning Race to the Top Early Childhood grant (451 pages + 693-page appendix). In fiscal policy mirroring No Child Left Behind, Vermont receives $37 million from the Feds and promises to kick in another $62 million from locals, but I worry more about the loss of childhood than the loss of money. Vermont promises to "Reflect a Birth through Grade 3 continuum that incorporates the Common Core State [sic] Standards." Vermont says this will "Develop productive people." I worry that Hinshaw and Scheffler are on target in warning that we will have a lot of ADHD kids in kindergarten.
