[Susan notes: This teacher did a great thing: encouraging students to voice their opinions to the New York Times. I tweeted the letters editor, thanking him, noting that I'm a failed letter writer. Actually, my tombstone can read "letter accepted by New York Times--but many failures. I think these students will never forget The Acceptance. Kudos, Amy Thivierge.]

Bulwark in Revolutionary War, Town in Vermont Faces Heroin Scourge (news article, March 6):

We were angered by your recent article about our town, Bennington. There are a number of places in Vermont and in the nation that are having similar issues with heroin. Because our town admits to it and is trying to deal with it, we shouldn’t be perceived as an awful place.

The hallways of our school, Mount Anthony High School, are not covered with “Baggies” for heroin, as a state trooper you quote claims. To the contrary, our school is clean and our bathrooms are not used for shooting up. The majority of students here are good kids who don’t deserve to be labeled “druggies” because they go to school in Bennington.

Because some people have problems, it doesn’t mean we all do.

The letter was signed by eight other students in a seminar taught by Amy Thivierge.
