[Susan notes: The writer makes critical point about 'Get them ready' curriculum that damages 4-year-olds. It continues to damage children throughout their Common Core lives. The Common Core claims to get them college- and career-ready, but as Paul Krugman points out in Jobs and Skills and Zombies, the jobs aren't there.]

Re Giving Up on 4-Year-Olds (editorial, March 27):

It is important to remember that all too many child care centers and preschools are making demands on children that are not developmentally appropriate. The expectations are so far removed from the young child's interest and understanding that they respond by acting out.

Young children spend too much time doing developmentally inappropriate tasks and activities to "get them ready" for inappropriate kindergartens. And too often, the poorer the children, the more rigid and academic their school experience.

When will the public question the absurdity of all this and say enough is enough?

The writer is an early childhood consultant.
