Your crossword clues haven't caught up with education reform. The clue 42 down for the May 12 puzzle was "Kindergarten learning." And the answer was "alphabet."

Oh my, oh my. Will Shortz needs to visit a few pre-schools, where kids who aren't proficient in the alphabet and basic geometric shapes are already behind.

In the name of rigor and grit, kindergartners forgo fingerpaint and buckle down to reading and pre-algebra.

Sad to say, the demands of preparing workers for the Global Economy show that the clue for 42 down should have been "Toddler learning."
