Re: Middletown parents upset over surprise summer-school news (June 27, 2014)

As a longtime New York teacher I applaud the parents expressing outrage over the "interventions" requiring young children to go to summer school.

I suggest that district officials do some research. Although there is no research supporting this horrible summer school blunder, there's plenty showing that what kids need is access to lots of books. Inviting kids to choose 15 books to take home over the summer (and keep) is a lot cheaper than the $500 apiece to require kids go to summer school skills "intervention." Cheaper and much more productive.

Demand research for school policies. There's solid research supporting the success of making sure kids have books they want to read. Start with Professors Stephen Krashen and Richard Allington.
