Orwell Award Announcement SusanOhanian.Org Home

[Susan notes: Of course this letter wasn't published. I don't think the Times allows criticism of David Brooks.

That doesn't mean we should stop trying. It was such an outrageous piece--blaming the poor for poverty. I couldn't begin to come to grips with how outrageous Brooks' pontifical condescension was. I just made my letter as short as possible.]

Submitted to New York Times but not published

To the editor

In The Nature of Poverty (May 1), David Brooks says "jobs are necessary, but. . . ."

There are no buts. A community cannot flourish without a living wage.
