To the editor

Headline proves that educational deficits don't prevent employment

Thank you for your courageous demonstration that deficits in elementary

skills such as mastery of basic grammatical conventions do not

necessarily render

one unemployable. Your bold, front-page, over-the-fold headline, "1 in

haven't passed test" (Dec. 19) -- about Sen. Gretchen Guess' very

sensible proposal

to eliminate the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam as a graduation

requirement, substituting instead a much less stigmatizing notation on

a student's

record -- is a proud proclamation that even a headline writer who

doesn't know,

or forgets, that "1" is singular can, nevertheless, be a contributing

of the journalistic community, and need not end up doing day labor

the sidewalks at the Daily News' building because he or she can't find

a steady

job at a living wage.
