[Susan notes: Here's another letter in the continuing outrage over IRA honoring Reid Lyon, an architect of NCLB's Reading First. ]

Dear IRA

May I congratulate you on your choice

of Reid Lyon -- who means well -- as a

keynote speaker.

Because, inasmuch as we're running out

of good jobs for competent graduates, it's

important to produce many young people

who feel that they've already failed well

before their brains have developed and

long before their lives have really begun.

They will thus be willing to take mini-

mum-wage service jobs -- if they don't

land in prison, our #2 growth industry,

which has many beds to fill.

And rest assured that the NCLB act

with its coercive/judgmental put-em-

on-the-spot phonics programs is very

apt to produce just such a population.

In the meantime let's not forget Frank

Smith who has always said, correctly, that

kids teach themselves to read DESPITE

the methods we use.
