To the editor

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige recently called the National Education Association a “terrorist organization.” I wonder if Rod Paige thinks of the NEA as a terrorist group because educators wield weapons of mass instruction.

NEA members have been educating the public about the good and bad of the so-called No Child Left Behind law.

Apparently the country’s top education official believes anyone who does not agree with the law as it’s written, who has the audacity to point out its flaws, or who expresses ideas for its improvement is guilty of “blocking,” of insufficient loyalty, or of inadequate patriotism. Labeling a group of loyal Americans totally immersed in the exercise of their civic responsibility “terrorists” is reprehensible.

As Abraham Lincoln said, “All that harms labor is treason to America. No line can be drawn between the two. If any man tells you he loves America, yet he hates labor, he is a liar. If a man tells you he trusts America, yet fears labor, he is a fool.”
