[Susan notes: There's a great term here: entrepreneurial research.]

To the editor

I just read Kathleen Manzo's review of the newly released book, The Voice of Evidence in Reading Research. It is no secret that I am an opponent of the misuse of "science" as exemplified by the Report of the National Reading Panel. I have consistently criticized the intrusion of the federal government into schools and the control No Child Left Behind exerts over

teachers and curriculum-based as it is on verifiably false "evidence." I have also followed the money trail and documented the connections among some of prominent researchers and the programs their own research is helping to

mandate. Suffice it to say, I am no friend to No Child Left Behind or to the entrepreneurial research that drives it.

Therefore, I was sincerely heartened to see that the proceeds from this new book are being donated to a hospital for terminally ill children. I commend the contributors for doing so. While I'm sure that I will disagree with the majority of the opinions in the book, I do support the generosity of the contributors in this instance.

I hope that other government approved researchers-those who are profiting from their own "objective" research on their own lucrative, "evidence-based" programs--paid for with OUR tax dollars--will follow suit and donate their profits and/or royalties to charity too.
