Orwell Award Announcement SusanOhanian.Org Home

[Susan notes: Don't miss the ad. All the signers aren't conservative; they all mouth the Business Roundtable agenda.]

To the editor

The full-page ad on August 25 called, "Charter School Evaluation Reported by The New York Times Fails to Meet Professional Standards" warms my heart. For decades those of us in the Resistance use of high-stakes testing have warned about tests that they reflect only one point in time, they do "not take into account such key

characteristics of students known to affect their performance as parental education, household income, and the quality of learning resources in the home," and that "all available bacground

characteristics must be considered simultaneously." But these quotes aren't ours; they're from the ad signed by some notorious

conservatives. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I wonder what will happen when these johnny-come-lately test-bashers collide head-on with the No Excuses Education Trust and No Corporation Left Behind crowd. I will savor the moment.
