To the editor

Kudos to James Harvey and Mary Beth Celio for the November 17th article in the PI about minority children, the WASL and achievement deficits.

Several of us have written papers and delivered invited speeches addressing the minority achievement gap. But the State of Washington's Educational Axis of Evil (State Superintendent of Public Instruction, A+ Commission and The Partnership for Learning) simply ignored every attempt to raise their awareness level.

The Essential Academic Learning Requirements are nonsensical. When was the last time any reader of the PI computed the arithmetic "Mode?" Well, your fourth grade child does on the WASL.

How many of the CEO's in the third-leg of the Educational Axis of Evil can "Use mathematics, computers, and/or related technology to model the behavior of objects, events, or processes?" A*L*L tenth graders must do it!

With a predicated two billion dollar budget short fall, BAG the WASL and the entire ill-informed, ill-conceived and wasteful so-called educational reform movement.
