While we worry that "20 years later, U.S. far from head of math class (News, Dec. 15) we might recall that "The Best and the Brightest" led us down the primrose path to disaster in Vietnam while in all the history of the human race through 1969 only three great thinkers, Land, Chomsky, and Oppenheimer, have done well in school, not to mention the fact that J.R.O., a mathematics and physics genius, pushed the button at Los Alamos thinking that this might be the end of all life on earth.
