To the editor

Thank you for your Dec 22 & 23 article and editorial on conflict of interest at the National Institutes of Health.

Could the problem of National Institutes of Health doctors accepting fees and stock from drug companies while making recommendations in the name of the NIH go beyond the drug industry? Could a similar unabashed mingling of commerce and science be happening between the educational industry and NIH?

While working at NIH, Dr. Reid Lyon has tirelessly promoted educational policies and practices that support Open Court, a scripted, one-size-fits-all, commercial reading instruction program now widely used in California's elementary schools, published by McGraw-Hill, a Fortune 500 company.
