[Susan notes: Of five letters published, this is the only one not to gush over Thomas Friedman's adoration of Bill Gates and to speak up for education for participation in a democracy.]

To the editor

Re " 'What, Me Worry?,' " by Thomas L. Friedman (column, April 29): I am aware of the deficiencies of many of our schools. But to make preparation for the labor market the chief goal of our schools is an antidemocratic idea. It is an important goal but must be placed alongside that of preparing our children for intelligent and responsible participation in our democracy.

Narrowing down their education to a limited, technical slice of our rich cultural heritage may possibly serve market forces but does not bode well for the future of our society.
