Orwell Award Announcement SusanOhanian.Org Home

[Susan notes: Birmingham, Alabama has discovered extreme financial malfeasance in the school district. So currently there is a great outcry over what happened to the money. Steve Orel is a lonely voice, asking the right question: What happened to the students? For more information about those students, see the WOO page on this site and

Asking the Right Questions

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Where are the missing funds? There is much ado about the missing monies, and rightfully so, at the Birmingham City School Board of Education.

There's something much more important than money: What about the missing children? Where are the 522 students who in my opinion, were pushed out of school during the Spring of 2000, to raise test scores and secure a huge bonus for the Superintendent?

Who is asking questions about these missing children? What is this city going to do to make amends to these young people and ensure that they have equal opportunities to continue their education? Pushing these kids out of school had catastrophic consequences for the children, their families, neighborhoods and our city. We have a chance to redeem ourselves and help our youth, but only when we start asking the right questions.

Steve Orel, the World of Opportunity
