To the editor

Your interesting Op-Ed, "The human evolution: Teach the children well" (July 29), with its lengthy discussion of back problems, failed to mention the Canadian government study which is said to have concluded that the major cause of musculoskeletal disease in the adult is having had to sit still, in both school and college, in those uncomfortable seats.

That is, we know that sitting maximizes the pressure in the intervertebral (disc) space: - just one more argument for more exercise, for more flexible classrooms, for home-schooling, and/or for turning off the television set!.

Meanwhile, it's been said, and possibly proven, that children learn best while moving around.
