[Susan notes: How nice to be quoted!]

Submitted to Washington Post but not published

To the editor

There has been a long-standing debate on whether schools in the United States are properly funded. The Post (“Teachers spend big to supply what schools don’t,” August 14) provided compelling evidence that those in the best position to know, teachers, feel schools do not get enough money, and feel so strongly about it that they spend a considerable amount of their own money on supplies and books for their students.

As Susan Ohanian has pointed out, unlike those working in corporate America, teachers don’t take paper home from work, they bring it from home to work.
